25th Anniversary of Saint John Baptist Scalabrini's Beautification
November 9th, 2022 marks the 25-year anniversary of the beatification of John Baptist Scalabrini. On the same day in 1997, there was a Feast of Dedication where he was honoured and proclaimed “Blessed” Bishop John Baptist Scalabrini. Beatification, in the Roman Catholic Church, is the second stage out of three in the process of canonization. Through the beatification process, a person that has passed is declared “Blessed” and is recognized to have lived a holy life. The beatification process consists of a year-long examination of the person’s life, virtues, writings, and reputation of their holiness, which is often conducted by the Bishop of the place the person resided or died.
Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini was declared venerable in 1987 and was later beatified in 1997 by Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, Italy. During his life, he founded the Missionaries of St. Charles on November 28, 1887, in order to assist the large number of Italians that were emigrating to different parts of the world during the time. He also established the Society of St. Raphael to provide material and aid to arriving immigrants. He was extremely influential regarding migration and did a lot throughout his life to help immigrants and emigrants.
Usually, on the anniversary of Blessed Scalabrini’s beautification, the Scalabrini organizations across the globe would host celebrations to acknowledge and celebrate this important event. However, with Blessed Scalabrini’s canonization in October, most of the organizations have spent the last month organizing events to celebrate this significant event.
